Encrypted messaging service WhatsApp has discovered a vulnerability in its system that could have allowed hackers access to its users’ phones, according to the BBC website.
By placing a voice call to the victim on WhatsApp, the hackers could implant malicious code that, even if the victim does not answer, remotely installs surveillance software. The software was reportedly developed by Israeli security firm NSO Group.
The service, owned by Facebook, has since fixed the issue, and recommended that its 1.5bn worldwide users update their messaging app, and has also said that it was too early to say who had been affected.
