New drivers could be banned from driving at night, safety ministers say.
According to the BBC, the ban is being considered by ministers at an attempt to improve road safety in England. Ministers are considering a graduated licence system to restrict inexperienced drivers, the Department for Transport (DfT) has announced.
This ban has emerged as figures suggest one in five drivers are involved in a collision within a year of passing their driving test.
As well as a night time driving ban, the DfT said the graduated system could feature additional restrictions such as a minimum learning period and not driving with passengers under a certain age. The DfT have not stated how long the system would be in place after a person passes their test.
Road safety minister Michael Ellis said graduated driver licensing couldĀ “help new drivers to stay safe and reduce the number of people killed or injured on our roads”.
Graduated licensing schemes are in place in several parts of the world, including parts of Australia, Canada and the USA. They have previously been rejected in Britain over concerns they would restrict young people from accessing education and employment.
The DfT are considering how the system could work as part of its Road Safety Action Plan, which will be published on Friday 19 July.
