The total number of coronavirus-related deaths in the UK has risen to 26,097. This is a significant increase from Tuesday, where the number of deaths was 21,678, an increase of 4,419 deaths.
This increase is largely due to a change in the way the Government is collecting and announcing data which now includes deaths in the community and care homes.
Domnic Raab, the foreign secretary, said in today’s daily press briefing, the new deaths occurred between 2 March and 28 April.
The significant increase in the number of deaths comes as Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer had earlier claimed in parliament that, ‘more than 27,000 people are likely to have died so far from coronavirus’.
