New lockdown measures for parts of England are to be announced ‘in the coming days’, a minister has said.
Speaking to the BBC, Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick said that the government is “currently considering what steps to take”.
But he said that a “localised but proportionate response has to be the way forwards” amid calls from experts to impose new national measures.
It follows news of a potential temporary closure of pub and restaurants in the worst-affected areas of England.
There could also be a ban on overnight stays away from home in these areas.
There is not a final decision on the time period or extent of potential closures.
The BBC’s political editor Laura Kuenssberg has said a formal announcement is not likely until Monday.
