Any delay to the final stage of easing lockdown in June – which includes reopening nightclubs – would be a blow to the fragile recovery of the hospitality industry, one expert warns. According to the BBC
Ministers have suggested they may need to delay the planned relaxation of restrictions on 21 June amid fears that new variants are more transmissible.
Greater Manchester’s night-time economy adviser Sacha Lord tells BBC Radio 4’s Today programme that it will take three years for businesses to recover in terms of paying off debt and rent arrears.
Those businesses that have been able to open in yesterday’s relaxation of restrictions are still operating at 50% capacity, he says.
“We can’t live by these rumours. We need absolute assurances. We have been told about this review date of June 14 – one week isn’t enough to get hospitality running again,” he says.
