UK net migration hit 504,000 in the year to June – the highest figure ever recorded, The Office for National Statistics (ONS) estimates.
People arriving legitimately from outside the EU and the resumption of post-pandemic travel are driving the increase.
Other factors include the reception of Afghan and Ukrainian immigrants, as well as Hong Kong residents.
The administration has committed to reduce net migration, which is the difference between the number of people entering and leaving the country.
Today’s numbers will fuel debate about the role of foreign workers in the UK economy and labour market, coming just weeks after Home Secretary Suella Braverman stated she intended to restore a government aim of reducing net migration to below 100,000.
Boris Johnson dropped that goal, established by previous Prime Minister David Cameron and supported by Theresa May, saying he would cut the level while ensuring firms had access to the skills they required.
Suella Braverman, the Home Secretary, said the high numbers were “understandable” given the circumstances in Ukraine, Afghanistan, and Hong Kong, as well as the “generosity of the British people.”
“However, the public expects us to regulate our borders, and we are committed to limiting migration over time,” she added.
Ms Braverman stated that the current level of migration is putting a strain on housing and lodging supply, as well as health, education, and other public services.
