Research from the RAC forecasts around 18 million journeys will be made by car during the August bank holiday weekend. It has been estimated to be 1.8 million more than last year.

The RAC research suggests that heavy traffic will be expected on Friday starting with the popular routes as people starting to go on day-trips to spend the long-weekend and people returning home after taking breaks due to the pandemic. It shows an estimation of 5.6 million separate journeys on Friday, 4.7 million on Saturday, 3.7 million on Sunday, and 4.4 million on Bank Holiday Monday.

Rod Dennis, RAC breakdown spokesman, stated that the official government statistics show that weekend traffic is now returning to pre-lockdown levels in order to ensure people that they are able to enjoy the summer safely.
