A senior lecturer in mental health nursing at Kings College London has been filmed allegedly calling a Remain activist “a fucking traitor” during a Brexit rally.
In a video posted to Twitter on Tuesday, Dr Niall McRae can be seen waving a Union Flag in the face of Femi Oluwole, 29.
The Remain campaigner had been standing behind a desk with a sign saying: “A no-deal Brexit would be a disaster for the UK. Change my mind.”
Dr McRae, who has been at King’s since 2002, campaigned for Brexit in the London borough of Sutton, one of the few London boroughs to vote to leave the EU, and had been queuing for the rally at Kensington Olympia before allegedly verbally abusing Mr Oluwole.
Dr McRae deleted his Twitter profile last night. In the past, he has tweeted in support of Tommy Robinson, the far-right founder of the English Defence League, calling him a “courageous man.” In a blog post before the rally, he said: “Footage of the Olympia rally will enter the history books.”
He added: “The tactics of Remain opponents will be recorded as a categorical error. Their smearing of Leavers as thick racist bigots is no longer working, and has become counterproductive.”
Mr Oluwole told the Huffington Post: “I was pretty disgusted to discover that the man who chose to hurl generic populist abuse at me and poke me in the face with a flagpole, rather than debate an issue which could ruin the futures of younger generations, is actually responsible for educating younger generations.”
At the time of publishing, King’s College London have been approached for comment.
