AstraZeneca and Oxford University have put their final clinical trials for their coronavirus vaccine on hold after a participant has fallen ill in the UK.

AstraZeneca stated that they were following protocols in the case of a participant falling ill during the trials. However, the vaccine that is being developed by them are considered to be a strong contender among many that are currently developing a vaccine.

There were high hopes considering the vaccine that is being developed could be the first to come on the market due to the successful testing in both phase 1 and 2. Phase 3 testing has involved 30,000 participants in the US, UK, Brazil and South Africa.

A decision on restarting the trial in these countries will be made by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, which could take days.
