Starting from Monday, 14th September, social gatherings of six people or more will be illegal in UK due to the steep increase of coronavirus cases.

The government stated that this new law will ban larger groups meeting socially in both indoor and outdoor locations. However, this new law will not be applied to schools, workplaces, funerals and organised team sports. Those who fail to comply with this law will be fined £100. This figure will double on each offence up to £3,200.

Previously, the UK allowed gatherings of up to six people or two households of any size to roam both indoors or outdoors freely with no police to enforce the law unless they exceeded 30.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: “We need to act now to stop the virus spreading. So we are simplifying and strengthening the rules on social contact.”

The PM is expected to give further details of the law later on Wednesday.
