The Fornite world cup is the largest prize pool in the history of e-sports, with over £24m shared amongst the winners this year. Fortnite is a popular online video game developed by Epic games.
Jaden Ashman, a 15-year-old from London, won almost £1m for coming second in the duos event. He split £1.8million with his partner. Another British teenager, 14-year-old Kyle Jackson from Kent, also walked away with a major prize.
This years world cup held from July 26-28 at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing, New York. The finals saw 100 players battling on giant computer screens with forty million players attempting to qualify over 10 weeks of online competition. According to Huffington Post, it is the biggest E-sports competition to date with over 30 nations represented with 70 players coming from the US, 14 from France and 11 from the UK.
A US teenager, Kyle Giersdorf won a record-breaking £2.4m)to become world champion of the computer game Fortnite.
According to BBC, When asked about his plans for the prize money Giersdorf said; “All I want is a new desk and maybe a desk for my trophy”
