Bourton Meadow Academy was the location of the May Day celebrations that took place on Wednesday, May 1st, 2024.

The celebrations were launched by the Mayor of Buckingham Town, Cllr. Anja Schaefer, and the Town Crier, Patrick Laws.

The celebration began at 10:30 in the morning, and while the sun was shining, students from Bourton Meadow Academy, Lace Hill Academy, and George Grenville Academy joined together and performed a variety of traditional country and maypole dances.

In addition, the playing field was packed with parents, guardians, and other members of the public who were able to take pleasure in watching the pupils perform the dances that they had laboured so diligently to master.

Debbie Dearlove, the sports coach at Bourton Meadow Academy, who has been largely responsible for organising the event, stated:

It was so lovely to see so many people come and support the tradition of Country and Maypole Dancing. The children were fantastic in their demonstrations of the dances. I can’t thank everyone enough for making it such a successful event for Buckingham.

The Chairman of the Town Centre and Events Committee, Cllr. Robin Stuchbury, made the following statement:
Thank you on behalf of Buckingham Town Council’s Town Centre and Events Committee and to Debbie Dearlove from Bourton Meadow School for hosting this year’s May Day event. It was attended by so many parents, grandparents, and members of the public marking this historic day and celebration within our community of Buckingham.”
