Milton Keynes Central Library is set to benefit from a £3.6M investment by the Labour-led Milton Keynes City Council, aimed at modernizing and futureproofing the facility. Plans for critical repairs and major upgrades will be reviewed for approval next week, ensuring the library remains accessible and operational for years to come.

The project will address essential infrastructure issues, including replacing the roof, restoring the lift to improve mobility access, and making the building watertight. Key facilities will also be reconfigured to better serve the needs of families, children, and adult learners.

Upgrades include relocating the children’s library to the ground floor for easier access and expanding classrooms for adult education to meet growing demand. Event spaces will also be redesigned to accommodate additional community activities.

Councillor Lauren Townsend, Cabinet Member for Resources and Customer Experience, emphasized the council’s commitment to libraries despite nationwide closures. “While many places in England have seen libraries close due to shrinking budgets, Milton Keynes City Council continues to invest in this vital service. Libraries are at the heart of our community, providing essential spaces for learning, family activities, and work.”

This initiative builds on Milton Keynes’ track record of opening and improving libraries, underscoring its dedication to community resources.
