Health officials are advising people to have both parts of the MMR vaccine after mumps cases reach their highest level in a decade.

In 2019, there are 5,042 cases of the viral illness due to the sudden outbreaks in both universities and colleges. Most cases were in young adults who missed out on their MMR injection. Public Health England stated that two full doses of the vaccine were needed in order to maximise protection.

The symptoms of mumps are painful swelling of the glands at the side of the face, headache, fever, joint pain, feeling tired and the loss of appetite. In most cases, people recover without treatment.
