Closing the car door is something millions of us do every single day but when Meghan Markle arrived at the Royal Academy of Arts to attend her first solo event since becoming a royal in 2018, she was caught on camera, closing the car door herself! It went viral. Two years later it has happened again.

This re-hashed ‘news’ is trending online, it is amongst the top 5 trending videos on the BBC News website.

Some people at the time praised her “down to earth” and “humble” attitude, while others joked she may put someone out of a job.

Etiquette expert William Hanson pointed out that this was not in fact a protocol breach.

He told BBC Radio 1 Newsbeat, “usually, if you are a member of the royal family or a dignitary, you have a member of staff to open and close a car door for you.” He added this was for security reasons rather than “airs and graces”.

It appears the person who opened the door, then stepped out of the way to allow the Duchess, 37, to greet her host and then close the door behind her.

The Sun’s royal correspondent, Emily Andrews tweeted, “A princess who still takes the time to shut her car door. Well done Meghan.”

This Meghan Markle moment became hugely viral on Twitter that it over shadowed the main event – which was an opening of an exhibition of works from the Oceania region.
