An urgent recall notice has been issued by Tesco for a number of different types of crisps and snacks. The products recalled by the supermarket chain are its own brand Free From 150g packs of Onion Rings, Cheese Flavour Balls and Bacon Rashers crisps. These products claim on its packaging that they do not contain gluten, wheat or milk.

But the supermarket giant said that in fact it had been found that the crisps do in fact possibly have gluten in them – which could pose a risk to people who suffer from a related allergy or intolerance or who have Celiac disease. Tesco has urged shoppers who have purchased the product due to it being gluten-free to not eat it, the Mirror reported.

Coeliac disease is a condition where the immune system attacks a person’s own tissues when you eat gluten. This damages the gut so the body cannot properly take in nutrients.

The products affected by the recall have the use by date of December 16 2023 and included all batch codes. Customers have been urged to return the products to their nearest Tesco supermarket for a full refund. If you have one of the recalled products, you will not need to have a receipt for the refund.

A Tesco statement read: “We’re recalling one date code of Tesco Free From 150g packs of Onion Rings, Cheese Flavour Balls and Bacon Rashers, as they may contain gluten which isn’t declared on the packaging.

“This could be a risk to people who have coeliac disease or an allergy/intolerance to gluten. All batch codes are affected and those who have purchased the crisps should check for the use by date of December 16, 2023. If you’ve bought an affected product and have coeliac disease or an allergy/intolerance/sensitivity to gluten, please don’t eat it.”
