Wycombe Wanderers have reached the second tier of English football for the first time in their 133-year history after a dramatic play-off final victory.
High Wycombe has only had a Football League club since 1993 and the team, nicknamed the Chairboys, just managed to avoid dropping out again on a dramatic final day of the season six years ago.
However, in an almost empty Wembley Stadium on Monday night, Joe Jacobson’s penalty gave them a 2-1 victory over Oxford United in the League One play-off final. After a goal from Anthony Stewart had given Wanderers an early lead in the ninth minute, and then Mark Sykes levelling the scoreline in the fifty-seventh minute for Oxford.
Fans across the Buckinghamshire Town, were still celebrating on Tuesday. A 16-year-old Wycombe Wanderers fan, called Aston Bowring, said, “We’ve put Wycombe on the map, we weren’t on the map before.”
After the Chairboys triumphant 2-1 win against Oxford United, veteran striker Adebayo Akinfenwa gave an on-pitch interview to Sky Sports, in which the 38-year-old referenced a similar post-match interview from four years ago.
In 2016, after scoring a penalty for AFC Wimbledon against Plymouth Argyle in the League Two play-off final – he famously said: “I think I’m technically unemployed, so any managers hit me up on the WhatsApp and get me a job.”
After Monday nights result, Akinfenwa, a long-time Liverpool fan, joked: “Let me tell you something, the only person that can hit me up on WhatsApp this time is Klopp, so we can celebrate together. You get me? Oi!”
Akinfenwa got his wish as Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp sent him a recorded message to congratulate him.
