A British man named only as David S had worked at the British embassy in Berlin, according to the BBC.

It is said that he allegedly passed documents to Russian intelligence ”at least once” in exchange for an ”unknown amount” of money.

On Tuesday he was arrested due to a joint UK-German investigation, outside Berlin and they then had both his home and workplace thoroughly searched.

It has been confirmed by London’s Metropolitan Police that a 57 year old British national in Germany has been arrested , as well as the involvement of the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command.

The prosecutors said he was hired to be a local staff member at the embassy.

The German authorities are in charge of the investigation, but officers will continue to work with German counterparts, the police said.

On Wednesday the man is due to appear before an investigating judge.
