South Korea stampede live updates: Death toll rises after crush during Halloween festivities as most killed ‘in their 20s and 30s’

At least 153 people have been killed after a stampede in the South Korean capital of Seoul, according to emergency officials; more than 1,700 emergency services personnel were deployed to the streets to treat the injured, including all available in Seoul.

The victims were crushed by a massive crowd surging forward down a small passageway in the Itaewon neighbourhood of the South Korean capital’s nightlife and leisure section;

As the evening progressed, some witnesses claimed the crowd became more disorderly and aggressive;

The incident unfolded at 10.20pm (1.20pm GMT);

Most of the bodies have been sent to hospitals, while the rest are being taken to a nearby gym so that they can be identified;

It is not clear what prompted the crowd surge;

A period of national mourning has been announced.
